Halloween sucks

Halloween is a festival celebrated in many countries especially in Europe and the USA. It is believed that Halloween has its origin from the medieval Celtic festival; Samhain. In numerous nations where it is celebrated, it is set on 31st October each year.  This paper is meant to illustrate why, in these modern times, Halloween has lost its touch.

There are a couple of reasons why Halloween sucks. They include or revolve around its main activities such as treat or trick, costumes, and other related aspects.

During treat or trick, candy, apples and related foodstuffs serve as main gifts provided to the youngsters.  Given that candy is readily available and cheap, it is the major foodstuff given to children during the treat or trick function. As a result, children get to consume too much candy; this is not healthy at all. Conversely, unlike before when Halloween was a much-celebrated festival, nowadays, most parents do not let their children conduct the ‘treat or trick’ phase as they fear that they could be given apples with razor blades or poisoned candy. Consequently, much candy, apples and other “treats” meant for children end up as waste. On the other hand, since youngsters are the only ones meant to be treated, most adults view this as an unfair treatment as candy and other delicacies are only reserved for the youngsters.

The other reason why Halloween sucks is its costumes. In the early times, costumes worn in the Halloween festival were simple and homemade. However, in these modern times, Halloween costumes have become more sophisticated thus become big business; fetching in lots of money for suppliers. In addition, most of these costume especially the plastic masks end up hurting those wearing them particularly the young children who are subjected to long episodes of treat or trick. Costumes, on the other hand, have become more sexualized with most female costumes being unpresentable.

In conclusion, the Halloween celebration today is gradually diverting from its true meaning. It has become commercialized and is slowly losing focus as many people concentrate more on other religious-based festivals.
