Suiting Up for Sustainability

While many people know about the annual social justice summit hosted at Boise High each year, little to no one knows about the backgrounds of the presenters. Sebastian Gillet, Kenzie Nelson, Riley Auchampach,  and Grace Staley have spent the past couple of months gathering and preparing for their presentation. presentation. When asked what they’re presentation was about, Sebastian Gillet and Riley Auchampach both responded with  “Sustainability”. Such a short answer for such a broad topic. So what will they be trying to teach us about on March 13th? Riley, with a big smile said, “ it will be about protecting the earth and making it healthier” while Sebastian chipped in by adding that their presentation will teach us about “prolonging the earth”. As some of us know, there is huge  danger in  not being able to combat the global pollution crisis. However, as we all know, it is very hard to remember that this crisis is happening when we don’t necessarily see it every day. These presenters pointed out that climate change “is a very hot topic in the world and we need to stop it.”. When asked about how they will uniquely address this problem, they responded with,“we think that there are a lot of ways that it [our world] can be helped that people haven’t looked at yet”. When asked about what they hoped people would get out of their presentation, Kenzie  said that they hoped people would find “ ways that you can individually improve the earth”. The topic the group chose wasn’t the funniest or the most popular, but it was something that they were all passionate about. As Oprah Winfrey once said, “Passion is energy, feel the power that comes from focusing on what comes inside you”. These four people are harnessing the power of Oprah and doing exactly what she was talking about in finding passion in their presentation.
