Over the past few weeks the weather has been pretty all over the place. In Boise I think we are lucky enough to have four beautiful seasons, but I have noticed that recently, the seasons have been behaving differently.
Recently, the winter in Boise has felt much too long, like it’s literally taking forever to end. That is what these past few winter months have felt like for me, and the cold weather seems to be continuing on from the beginning of October, to the middle of April.
This past month the weather has been warm, cold, in between and I honestly just want the weather to make its mind up! The weather seems to affect people in different ways. Some people enjoy the winter because of fun winter activities and some people just genuinely like colder weather, but for the majority I know that summer is preferred.
I asked a handful of my friends which season they prefer and why. Avery Fletcher says that she does enjoy winter skiing, but overall summer just has better vibes. Addie Walter says that she much prefers the summer because it seems to lift her mood, she said that the winter weather just makes her feel down sometimes which is very understandable.
I have personally noticed a weird and wonky change in weather over these past few months. It’s gone from being freezing cold with snow and rain, to the next week being beautifully sunny out with clear skies. As much as I appreciate the warm weather I would and others would definitely appreciate it staying that way. Looking into it, apparently the weather has been so wonky due to global warming trends. La Nina, the periodic cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific, effects also come into play with the weather affecting this year’s weather a lot so far, making it colder and wetter.
Do you ever wonder why the weather can make you feel totally great one day and kind of not so great the next? This is most common during the winter months of the year for people. Sunlight exposure affects people’s serotonin levels, so when there isn’t a lot of it, it tends to bring some people’s moods down. Physical activity tends to go down in the winter months, which can really affect some people’s mood because moving your body is very important for mental health.
If these past few months of the winter weather have got you feeling down, don’t worry, we only have just a few months until the sunshine is out!
