When you think about the best month out of the calendar year, what comes to mind? For the average person it would be December, or maybe the summer months like July and June. It turns out that the most popular months are May and December, because May is when it gets warm, and December is when we get time off from school. But out of all the months, one sticks out to me as one of my favorites. Right in between one of the most disliked months, March, and one of the most popular months, May, lies my favorite month.
This month is April! Although not the most popular month with my peers, I am here to convince you why April should be at the top of your favorite months list.
After interviewing around Boise High, some say April is one of the most boring. With the bipolar weather and the agonizing wait for summer, the April haters may have a point. However, I think the weather of April is beautiful. Picture this: a nice foggy morning with light rain showers one day, then the next it is the perfect sunny day with mild temperatures. April provides variation, and the wet weather brings the green back into our lives, with the foothills blossoming with flowers, and the trees around Boise growing back their leaves.
April isn’t necessarily seen as a holiday month like November with Thanksgiving Day, October with Halloween, and December with Christmas. In my opinion, a holiday just as fun as those big three is often forgotten in the heart of April: Easter. My family has a tradition of going to Easter Sunday worship, then going home for festivities. Easter dinner, a family egg hunt, egg painting, plus gift baskets and presents makes Easter one of the most underrated holidays.
April is a month packed with different religious celebrations. Christians celebrate Easter, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Judaism, it is Passover; Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan; plus Sikhism and Hinduism both celebrate Vaisakhi, which marks the Sikh New Year and celebrates the spring harvest. The outdoors starts to warm up and blossom with amazing spring hiking, with the rivers flowing with life to make the city bloom with flowers and get ready for summer.
Finally, April is seen as the month of nature, as both Earth Day and National Arbor Day are celebrated during this time, promoting the planting of trees to make our world greener. No more icy cold mornings, and it’s finally the time of year to bust out your shorts with the warm weather.
Driving is easier with dry roads and no surprise snow storms that happen in March. Bogus Basin, our local ski resort, is projected to stay open around mid April giving us the opportunity to ski during the spring. If all of that doesn’t convince you, April is only one month away from summer break and the end of school. April is truly one of the most beautiful months, and is the best month of the year.
