Teenagers are naturally prone to their creative, curious, and potentially addictive personalities. With the new trend of vaping on the rise, teens are intensely being affected by this raging epidemic.
As parents, students, teachers and the FDA scramble to put together a way of enforcement and prevention for this very fast growing industry, underaged users across the world are becoming more and more familiar with the use of e-cigarettes everyday.
Yes, a young audience has become so familiar with these devices… but why? The FDA has come to the recent conclusion that underaged users are being targeted because of flavored products sold by these companies.
The Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb is taking a stand for change in the teenage “epidemic”. On September 12th Scott Gottlieb took his efforts to the public when he warned manufacturers of all e-cigarette brands, a potential ban of their flavored products was on the way.
The National Tobacco Survey has recently shown a 75% increase in use among high school students compared to data in 2017, says The Washington Post.
Action has most recently been taken by the notices sent to labs producing the e-cigarettes made by “Juul” giving a 60 day deadline to create a new plan for the market to be changed from underaged users to a more appropriate audience. Because of this agreement one most likely result of the notice will be the temporary or potential permanent distribution of flavored products.
Because the use of nicotine (which is contained in most vaping devices) is so addictive, the change of audience will not come about so simply.
Since the production and distribution of vapes, the cigarette industry is suffering immensely. A large fraction of regular cigarette users have switched over to the non-conventional way of smoking. Vaping.
Also, the current profitability of cigarettes has dropped because margins on e-cigarettes is way lower says Jim Cramer in “Vaping is decimating the cigarette industry—and it could get even worse” on CNBC.
As modern technology advances so will the creation of these devices. The next steps taken into the containing of this “epidemic” will be taken by the companies and the public. All it takes is time.
