Old Traditions Get a ‘Brave’ Twist At Homecoming 2019
September 23, 2019
This year BHS will be going through the age old traditions of Homecoming in a brand new way. As the school carries on with honored rituals, they will also be marking the start of a new legacy. September 26th will be the first time the Boise High Football Team will play the Homecoming game as the Boise Brave.
“Our team is really focused and is preparing extremely hard for the Homecoming game. We’re looking to bounce back and make up for a couple of really tough losses, early on in the year. […] I’m really thankful that I get to attend this school so I’m hoping that we come out with a win,” says Aeneus, new BHS quarterback.
The Homecoming football game accompanies a long list of Boise High traditions, most notably the Homecoming dance. It was important that the Homecoming theme this year reflected school-wide excitement about our future as the Brave. “Our theme for Homecoming this year is [Boise in Color]. We wanted a theme that was applicable to the new mascot change.” explains student leadership member, Tommy Reynolds.
Maddie Oppenheimer, also on student council, described the fun decor the dance will feature. “There’s going to be a lot of cool lights and lasers, we’re also going to have a DJ that actually did has experience playing EDM,” reveals Oppenheimer.
Beloved traditions like the Homecoming parade and powderpuff are in the works as well. Senior Powderpuff coaches Phillip Gisler and Brogan Richards are preparing their team for game day. “Powderpuff is so much fun to coach. You see a different side to all the girls. They get crazy competitive, which is fun to see,” says Gisler.
Kenzie Kluksdal, captain of the Girls Varsity Soccer Team, is excited for her team’s float in the Homecoming parade. “My family has this old car called ‘The Thing’ and another family has a vintage convertible so we decorate the cars and some girls ride in them while other girls follow it with soccer balls. It’s a really fun team bonding activity,” Kluksdal explains.
Most students agree that some of the best parts of Homecoming are the before and after of the main events. Dylan Antonucci, a BHS Junior, says her favorite parts of Homecoming are “getting ready with friends and the pictures.” Boise Senior, Sam Zimmer, seems to agree, stating, “It’s fun to just go with a group of friends and have a good time. […] This year we’re having people over at my house and there’s gonna be like 35 kids and we’ll have a taco truck,”.
Homecoming festivities take a special place in the hearts of BHS students. Homecoming, being the only formal open to all classes, fosters a sense of community and excitement for the upcoming year. students that are Sophomores to Seniors get to celebrate Boise High together, and this year we have a little extra to celebrate as the new Boise Brave.
