Trends Everywhere You Go: Miscellaneous Non-Sense We Pay Attention To
March 2, 2021
What makes a trend? What is a trend? According to Envato “A trend is an idea, activity, philosophy, or action that is constantly changing over time.” It is something that is always changing. No matter what, a trend will never stick around for very long. Whether it is a clothing trend, a meme, or a popular song, it always moves to the so-called “next best thing”.
Okay, let’s look at the Croc trend. Whether you love them or hate them they are here to stay. Many people were confused when the Crocs started coming back, but many were stoked. Especially teenagers, who are big fans of the 2002 boating shoe. Victoria Wile is a Junior at Boise High who also is fond of Crocs. She says, “I like them because of how comfy they are. They’re like flip flops but cover your whole foot, which is super nice for the summer since flip flops are annoying. You can also wear them basically anywhere and you can get them wet. Plus they come in a ton of cute colors which can make them fun and personal.”
Now the clowns. Remember the time when we had clowns running through the nation. Really what was that? This started as a meme, which grew into a trend, then honestly a problem. In recent times, we probably would overlook the whole situation and find it entertaining, but in 2016 people were genuinely fearful. It almost didn’t seem real that most people were just doing this to be funny or trendy, which brought up many questions of, why? People still don’t know why it happened, and that’s what a lot of trends are, confusing. But, it reached a wide audience with occurrences beyond United States borders.
Let’s talk about Spotify Wrapped. If you have Spotify this is what you look forward to all year. This has been around since 2015, but in 2020 many people were posting about their music throughout the year. It is entertaining and this trend will stay for a while in some form or another. Remedy Skoro Booth, a Junior at Boise High who uses Spotify regularly, had this to say: “I like Spotify Wrapped. I suppose it’s just a summary of what I’ve listened to all year. It’s trendy because it’s an easy way to understand what kind of music you’ve been enjoying and you can share that with other people or come back to it later. My wrapped from years ago is a lot different than my music taste now, so when I go listen to an old one it brings back memories. People like to judge each other. Having that playlist and those stats make it easy to know what your friends and family listen to.”
Trends are a funny thing. One person says, wears, or posts something that is weird or new and people are all over it. It doesn’t matter what it is, just if people like it they will follow. World wide or just in your family, trends happen all the time even if we don’t know it.
