One of the more interesting storylines regarding our athletic teams this year, is the decision to split up the Spirit Squad into the cheer and dance teams.
In 2016 the dance team was created and ever since there have been several repetitions of a joint or split squad. Last year at Boise the cheer and dance teams were conjoined and named the Spirit Squad. This year the teams split again. Talking to cheerleader Bailey Martin, she said “I think the split of the team was a good idea because there is some stuff that cheer does that and dance that might not. Overall, I think it was the best decision.”
Cheerleaders wear uniforms while doing cheers, stunts and jumps. The dance team focuses purely on musicality and dance routines while also whereing uniforms. Both teams work to increase school spirit at games and assemblies by boosting student moral. Dance and the cheerleaders can both be found on the sidelines of home games, while the cheerleaders also travel with the teams to away games to support the teams while at all games. Both teams are essential in supporting our athletic teams and students while each focusing on their specific strengths.
The students at Boise aren’t always up to date when it comes to cheer and dance and Esther Wade stated “I still thought the dance and cheer teams were combined as the spirit squad, I only learned they split up a week ago.” Encouraging this change has allowed each team to grow and expand their individual team focuses. So far this year, the teams have done so great at hyping up the crowd at the games, there cheers, dance, and stunts, are a super fun part of games.
The dance and cheer teams do a lot for the school and we should be grateful and proud of both teams, no matter if they are combined or not.
