*Spoiler Alert*
The long-awaited movie has arrived: Moana 2. The movie takes us on another adventure across the Pacific, with Moana, and friends, as she explores the ocean around her and tries to find others living in it. It has been several years since Moana was released, so can it live up to the original?
Moana, released in 2016, is the story of an adventurous girl, Moana, who is chosen by the water to help save her island. She leaves her island and on a canoe travels through the Pacific Ocean to find Maui. Maui is a demigod of the wind and sea who stole the heart of Te Fiti, which is destroying Moana’s island, so she sails to find him, in order to make him restore the heart of Te Fiti. To be able to restore the heart of Te Fiti, they have to get through a big storm and fight Te Ka. They go through ups and downs, on their way, but eventually fight Te Ka, and restore the heart of Te Fiti.
In the sequel, it takes us on another journey with not only Moana and Maui, but also others from Motuni including Loto, Moni, and Kele, who all have specific strengths and were chosen by Moana to go on this adventure with her. The movie starts out with Moana exploring on her own and looking for signs of life from other people. She finds a cup that leads her to finding the island of Motufetu.
They are about halfway to Motufetu, the island the stars are aligned with, when they encounter the Kakamora and they make a pact with them, which breaks the curse and let the Kakamora return to their island. Moana gets some of their neurotoxin so she can rescue Maui, and have him help her finding Motufetu. They get to the spot and Maui is trying to pull the mountain up and get struck by lightning, so Moana goes to help pull up the mountain while the others help find Maui. She gets struck and dies, but all the ancestors help restore her life, and while saving her life she gets converted to a demigod, just like Maui.
They pull up Motufetu, and when exploring it they see boats in the distance, which means other people are there to, they all meet and go back to Motuni, to show her island that other people do exist and they are all connected by Motefetu, the central hub of the islands.
There are a lot of similarities while also a lot of differences in the two movies, and even though the 2nd movie was a great movie, I still think that the original movie will always be my favorite, with its captivating songs and story.
