First Presbyterian Church of Boise
Established on February 24, 1878, the First Presbyterian Church began with 17 members. At first, services were held in the Baptist Church at 9th and Idaho. In 1894, services were moved to 9th and State Street nearby, with woodworking and stained glass implemented into the new sanctuary. Over the years, the church expanded, adding a three-story education building in 1929 and a new sanctuary in 1954 to accommodate a growing congregation. F
Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist
Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist traces its roots to the early Catholic missions in the Idaho Territory. Construction of the cathedral began in 1906 under the orders of Bishop Alphonse Glorieux and was completed in 1921. The cathedral’s architecture features a dome ceiling and stained glass windows depicting scenes from the New Testament. It serves as a place of worship for Boise’s Catholic community.
Ahavath Beth Israel Synagogue
Just 2 miles down the road from Boise High, and founded in 1895, Ahavath Beth Israel is reportedly the oldest synagogue in continuous use west of the Mississippi River. Moses Alexander, the Mayor of Boise and the Governor of Idaho in the early 1900s who became the first practicing Jewish governor in the United States was instrumental in the synagogue’s establishment. The design of the building incorporates arched windows and intricate detailing using Rundbogenstil and Moorish styles to blend the culture of Boise and Islamic architecture. The building was initially near the capitol building, but relocated in 2003 to accommodate the growing congregation and continues to serve as a hub for Boise’s Jewish community.
