Treefort 2018 has caused a lot of hype surrounding Boise. It’s a festival that’s been a part of Boise for 6 years, and will last from March 21-25, 2018. Many students are anticipating the festival’s various, eclectic musicians and everything else it has to offer- including comedy, films, food, and ale (this part isn’t for high-schoolers. If you know someone of age who enjoys a drink, spread the word, though.) Treefort is growing and evolving quickly, along with gathering a lot of attention locally and across the northwest. Treefort has something for everyone, so stay tuned to learn about all of the exciting events it is offering this year!

Comedyfort (Open to Public- 21+)

Life gets to everyone once in a while. If you need a laugh, Treefort’s comedians are delivering. With quirky commentary and stand up acts, these comedians are guaranteed to whisk away your blues. Pop in to hear Anchor Soong from Portland- who “is the product of a broken family, a good education, hip hop and the internet” (Treefort), or Bianca Cristovao, international stand up comic who was Laugh Factory’s Funniest person in the World finalist last year. Sit back with a beer (or lemonade) and let the laughter flow.

Filmfort (Tickets Required- All Ages)

A trip to the movie theater never disappoints, and with Filmfort, your experience is bound to be endlessly better. Showing are films like “Clara’s Ghost”, a story of a girl finding comfort in the supernatural, and “Everything Beautiful is Far Away”, filled with eccentric characters and a robot in search of a mystical lake. The Flicks is hosting these films and others throughout the Treefort time frame, along with workshops and Q&A’s with renowned filmmakers. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience true cinematic bliss!

Foodfort (Free Entry-All Ages)

Treefort’s music leaves in you in a state of euphoria, but when you’re 5 bands in and your stomach starts growling, you need to refuel. Head over to Foodfort, where there’s a plethora of local and global chefs preparing meals just for you. Restaurants vary from Wildroot Cafe and Juniper to the Red Feather Lounge. But the spotlight remains on the unique dishes such as a Pork Dou steam bun with side of spicy slaw or “Eden Creamery Chevre Tart with Sweet Valley Organics Huckleberries and Global Gardens Tomatoes.” No matter what you choose you’re guaranteed to leave satisfied and re-energized- ready for more fun activities!

Hackfort (Tickets Required- 11+)

For those of us who are passionate about tech culture, Hackfort is the place to be. Throughout Treefort week, workshops centered on programming, cryptocurrencies, and gaming will take place at JUMP. Anyone with a Treefort wristband can pop into the various workshops, but is not guaranteed a spot. To ensure you get in, show up early! Learn how to write a video game, what the future of sound holds, or about the newest technologies in space travel. So for young and old tech-lovers alike, consider working at a “digital humanities conference” and learning all about everything technology.

Kidfort (Free-All Ages)
Stuck watching your little sibling when just around the corner Treefort’s music calls your name, drawing you in? No need to keep resisting. Treefort has something for everyone no matter the age. You can drop them off at Kidfort, an exciting, multicultural, safe environment for your siblings to jam out while you head for the main stage. Kidfort offers an abundance of activities and programs such as theatre productions, lessons from Boise Rock School, and of course arts and crafts, but that’s just the start. Kidfort incorporates educational features  including nature by going to a worm farm or learning how shake your booty in Flamenco (dance) lessons. Whether you’re stuck babysitting or need a break from you younger sibling, Kidfort is the perfect solution- you may even stay for a story or two.

Skatefort (Free-All Ages)

Whether you’re a skate addict or just a bum looking for some fun, you’re in luck! Partnering with the local state community, Skatefort blends music and boarding together while also raising awareness for local skating communities. With different competitions like mini ramp skate and free skate, there are plenty of opportunities to show off your skills. Skatefort will also be featuring live bands. A thrilling performance called Band Dialogue II, including a large scale piece written to be played by 10 bands simultaneously, will blow you away. So hop on your board and kick it down at Rhodes during Skatefort for a well-rounded cause and place to show off your sick kick flips while jamming out.

Storyfort (Free- All Ages)

Word-loving folks might want to check out the 5th annual Storyfort. It is bringing poetry, fiction, rock history, hip hop, memoir, journalism, cocktail stories, and brew master narratives to our festival. Various local and out-of-state writers bring unique ideas to the table, and there is something sure to interest everyone. Hear from a writer of video games like Prince of Persia and Assasin’s creed (Ceri Young), The host of The Big Listen, also known as the “broadcast about podcasts” (Lauren Ober), or even see a live reading that will revisit The Odyssey and combine fiction, poetry, and ballet! You can’t miss this!

Yogafort (Tickets Required- All Ages)

Are you stressed, overworked, wanting to curl up and sleep all day? Head down to JUMP and explore the relaxing 3 day mini festival full of yoga and meditation- all to live musicians. The goal is to open up your mind and soul to ignite your inner relaxation diva with the help of global instructors and musicians. Available to all ages and skill levels, Yogafort is a time to get your sweat on and root yourself amongst the craziness of Treefort. Yogafort welcomes you with a big hug, a Namaste, and helping hand.

No matter who you are or what you’re interested in, Treefort has something for everyone. This year’s lineup features over 90 musicians like George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Andrew W.K., Princess Nokia, and The Treepeople from our very own Boise, Idaho. Collin Fonantine, a junior, says he loves “The aspect of the people there and being able to hang out with people that enjoy music purely for the enjoyment of music and nothing else.” If you enjoy music, you are guaranteed to find someone performing who speaks to your soul. The genres range from hip-hop to funky rock-n-roll to bluegrass- making a blend of culture and sound truly unique to Treefort. Head down this year and get hyped!
