On January 13th, 2023, Miley Cyrus released her new hit single “Flowers,” the first song from her upcoming album, Endless Summer Vacations. The song is getting a lot of attention, as it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Fans are loving the track, not only because of the song itself, but also for the hidden messages Miley has wrapped into it.

After the song was released, fans immediately started speculating that the song was targeted towards Miley’s ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. The first indicator that Miley wrote this song about Liam was the release date. The song was released on the same day as Liam’s birthday and many think it wasn’t a coincidence.

Many fans have also theorized that the lyrics of the song were mirrored after Bruno Mars’ song, “When I Was Your Man”. In his song, Bruno Mars used lines such as “I should have bought you flowers and held your hand” and “take you to every party cause all you ever wanted to do was dance.” In Miley’s song, she sings, “I can buy myself flowers” and “I can take myself dancing and I can hold my own hand.” Many think that Miley did this because Liam ostensibly dedicated this song to her at some point during their relationship.

Miley makes many other allusions to her relationship in song. In the song, she says, “We were right ‘til we weren’t, built a home and watched it burn.” Many believe that this was a direct reference to the Woolsey fire, that burned down their Malibu home in 2018. However, it could also be a double entendre, refernencing their dying relationship. Not only did Miley incorporate subtle disses into the song, but she also made many nods to Liam in the song’s music video. In the video, she is seen wearing two outfits: a gold dress and a black suit. Both of these outfits seem to have some kind of hidden meaning to them. First off, fans think that the gold dress is supposed to resemble Jennifer Lawerence’s gold dress that she wore at the premiere of The Hunger Games. There were rumors going around that Liam and Jennifer’s on screen relationship might have been taken off screen. The gold dress Miley wore hints at this. The second outfit she wore was an oversized black suit that many think was identical to the one that Liam once wore on the red carpet. There is a video of the two of them at the Avengers: Endgame premiere where Miley mimics licking Liam. He was visibly irked. There have been speculations that Liam said to her, “Could you behave for once?” and many fans think that was the moment Miley was trying to reference.

These are just a few of the Easter eggs Miley worked into her new song “Flowers”. Fans are dying to see what else she will bring to the table with her upcoming album Endless Summer Vacations and if she will nestle any more secret messages in them.
